The trade show season is upon us. We all know these shows can be costly in terms of time, effort and money, so it's important that you give yourself every chance at success.

Proper preparation, planning and follow-up are key elements of any successful marketing project and trade shows are no exception. Some areas to focus on:

  • Pre-show checklists, created in Word, that can be easily ticked off in either hard copy or on your screen, and cover each and every aspect of the show, including transport requirements, travel requirements, media and marketing requirements, due dates for all deposits, service / booth order forms, etc.
  • Pre-show mailings, using Outlook, Access or Excel with Word.
  • Trade show cost evaluation and tracking in Excel.
  • Diagram the booth layout to aid in faster set-up and efficient use of space in Visio.
  • Preparation of price lists and schedules and name tags, etc., in Excel and Word, for use at the show.
  • Organization of contact information collected during the show.
  • Keeping track of the competition.
  • Very importantly, the development of an effective lead follow-up system so that you can capitalize on your opportunities.
