Sorting by Month in Microsoft Excel

By Deborah J. Sparks

QUESTION:

"Is there any way to sort by month instead of alphabetically?"

ANSWER:

Absolutely - use the sort option below.

SORT BY MONTHS

Have you ever tried to sort months that you've entered in a column or row and ended up with April before January? Here's the solution:

  • Click anywhere within your data
  • Data menu, Sort option
  • Click the Options button
  • Select the full or abbreviated months from the First key sort order list

Notice you can also use the sort options to sort horizontally instead of vertically.
